A new cheese factory opens in Disentis: La Sennaria Surselva.

The Sennaria will turn 2 million liters of milk every year into swiss cheese. In special cellars these cheeses will ripen to full flavour. 

Disentis Sennaria

The building is designed by a famous architect: Gion Caminada from the nearby village Vrin. The cheese-factory is built on the Salaplauna: a large open space opposite of the village Disentis. It is on the road between Disentis and its camp site, Fontanivas. There is a shop where you are welcomed to buy the cheese directly from the producers. They can also send you the cheese by post. 

As the cheesery is a company you can even buy stocks or bonds from.

If you buy bonds you do not get swiss francs in return but swiss cheese. It is not a joke, it is delicious. It seems the stocks and bonds are already sold out.

has the  famous artist Tinguely been active around Disentis? No!

The origin of this piece of craftmanship is a farmer’s system to scare rats away from the water. By ringing bells and make wheels turning the rats do not dare to go higher up into the mountains.
I do not really believe the rats do obey to this idea but nevertheless you will find here and there little mills on water streams in the Surselva for this purpose.

Take your time to watch this one. It is by far the nicest of the region. You can find it in Clavaniev, Disentis

Hotel Sax: is located at the children’s slopes. When there is enough snow you can ski to the hotel and in the morning depart to the cable car station.

Parkhotel Baur: is the closest hotel to the cable car station. A large but cosy hotel near the sports center, the village. Nice location.

Hotel Cucagna: is on the main road of Disentis . Its neighbour is the supermarket COOP. The parking lot is sometimes crowded. The hotel is very near the centre of Disentis. Cucagna runs a hostel at the opposite side of the road.

Hotel Montana: is near hotel Sax and near the Fire Department of Disentis. A little bit further out of the centre but the local bus stops frequently at Hotel Montana.

Disentiserhof: is a mixture of apartments and a hotel. When you drive to Disentis in Winter coming from Chur you see the hotel from far away. A landmark in the landscape. Has a very special children’s castle and a large swimming pool. 2 km away from the cable car station but the local bus stops here as well.

For beginners the slope near Hotel Sax, ‘skiwiese Sax’  is used. A nice magic carpet is available for the very beginners and for those having a little more experience a larger slope plus lift is available.

Once ski- turns can be taken and one knows how to slow down and stop the pupils go up with the cable car to the mountain.

On the mountain you have the Ponylift which has really nice benches alongside for the parents to watch their children. The operators are really friendly guys helping every kid in need onto the lift.

Another rather small lift is the ‘Palius’ which is an ‘anchor’lift taking two skiers at once. This slope has some more challenges for those learning to ski.

At the end of the week the kids compete in a downhill race. Every time this is a highlight for the kids. They can win a gold, silver or bronze medal. The times are recorded and the races are commented by a genuine race commentator.
After the race the kids get their evaluation in a booklet. Sometimes they pass, sometimes they need more practice and are advised to take the same level again.

Private lessons and lessons for adults are also available. Information on the ski school in the office in Hotel Sax.

1. Caischavedras: the main restaurant with the largest capacity. Try the French Fries with Bolognaise sauce plus mayonaise. The burger is also really nice after skiing.

2. Bar Nevada: Formerly known as the Tipi-bar. In season 2010-2011 the Tipiµ-tent is replaced by a new bar  with an all glasswall. In bar Nevada you can get soup or a donut. It si more a bar with music and drinks.

3. Lai Alv: This restaurant is the highest restaurant on the slopes. Just below the magnificent Pez Ault. They serve about teh same meals as in Caischavedras. It is smaller and cosier tah Caischavedras. The terrace is aslo very nice but it can be cold and winy up ther as thsi site has more expositon to the weather conditons

Every 15 minutes the cabins go up and down but on peak moments, in the morning and around 16.00, the cabins go up and down continuously.

It is possible to ski down to your car from Caischavedras to SintCatrina if enough snow is available. This slope is a black slope. So you need to be experienced.

Most people take the cable car back to SintCatrina

If you are on holiday with your family and you have a dog as well this can be a problem from time to time. For example dogs cannot ski.

So often you see a dog owner left behind in Caischavedra playing with the dog while the other family members are on the slopes.

Fludog is a service in Disentis that can take care of your dog: dogsitting.

Dogsitting service is  on Via Alpettas 16, Disentis. It is in Faltschardiras, a hamlet of Disentis.
It is near the hotel Disentiserhof.
You can also reach Faltschardiras with the local bus (ortsbus).
On demand they come over to get or bring your dog.

You can buy a pass for one day, half a day (from 12.00 or from 13.00 on) or for 1 1/2 day. That is for those coming for the weekend . Most people buy a multiple day pass and in this way you get a discount.

You can also buy a pass for the season

for parents with young children who use only the two lower lifts (pony & palius) you can also get special passes with a discount.

Families also get a discount of 10 % for multiple day ski passes if you ask for the discount.

You do not need to bring a passport picture as they make one on the spot with a kind of a web-camera. This picture is printed on your pass. When you  pass the checkpoint your picture is on display for the controller on a big tv-screen. Twins can pass with each other’s ski-pass but for others it is difficult to cheat.
