Camping Fontanivas is the camp site in Disentis. It is a very nice camp site controlled by the Touring Club de Suisse. As you expect in Switzerland everything is very clean and neat. When coming with a caravan you better call in advance for reservation since these places are limited during high season. With a tent you will find a spot more easily on the ‘tent pasture’ in the back of the campsite.
In Camping Fontanivasyou have very nice camping facilities. The spots are not extra large but the location gives you a very spacious feeling. You are located next to the Rhine, surrounded by peaks of 3000 meter height. In the Vorderrhein, as the Rhine, is called at this spot you can of course fish but you can also dig for gold.
The water is rather cold (after all it is molten snow) so swimming is not advisable. The depth of the water is not more than 40 to 50 centimeters and walking bare foot is very nice. Children should be looked after though since, more upstream, in Sedrun they sometimes open the dam on the Rhine to produce hydro-power electricity. The water current will then enlarge at once and without warning.
If you want to swim you can do it in the lake Fontanivas. It is a little lake on the camp site in which a very nice water playground is built for children. You are in the mountains , the water is molten snow so it is rather cold. In the next village , Sedrun there e is a very nice Pool however; If you want to swim in a real mountain lake you can head for the Cauma See in Flims-Laax. It is 45 minutes away by car, lower along the Surselva Valley. Due to volcanic activity the Cauma See is 22 degrees. Nice swimming in summer.
For those arriving by train of bus: there is a ‘Ortsbus’. This bus circles around the village four to five times in high season. Timetables are at every bus stop. You can get to the campsite with this bus starting at the railway station. The bus waits at the parking lot between the station and the kiosk.
